Veins

Veins return the blood back to the heart. Arteries bring the blood from the heart to the tissues.

The blood in the veins of the legs has to flow uphill. Therefore, this flow is assisted in the legs by one way valves. If the valves are working effectively and efficiently these valves prevent the blood from falling back down in the legs due to gravity.

Varicose Veins

Varicose veins are abnormal enlarged superficial veins secondary to abnormal weak inefficient vein valves and vein walls. The veins bulge and hold blood too long so its return to the heart is inefficient. When the veins are removed and or sclerosed, the blood is shunted into more efficient veins and returns to the heart more effectively.
Spider veins (telangiectasia) are the smaller thread like purple and or red colored superficial veins. These also can cause symptoms and worsen over time.

Varicose Vein Etiology

  1. Heredity: This is the most common. There is frequently a history of mother, father or grandparents or other blood relatives.
  2. Female: Females are affected 4 to 1
  3. Pregnancy: This is a big strain on the veins both from pressure from the enlarged uterus and or hormonal changes affecting the vein wall and valves.
  4. Age: The incidence of varicosities increases with age up to about 60-70 years old.
  5. Occupation: Prolonged sitting or standing increases this risk of wearing out the valves.
  6. Birth Control Pills: These simulate pregnancy and can aggravate varicose veins.
